Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) will hold the Human Rights Defender School program as part of its 2024 Internal Community Service initiative. This program aims to equip the academic community with perspectives, knowledge, and skills in advocating for and protecting human rights.

This event is a collaborative effort between the UMM Center for Civilization and Human Rights Studies, the Association of Human Rights Teachers (SEPAHAM) Indonesia, the UMM Student Executive Board, and the Munir Human Rights Museum at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Brawijaya. The goal is to establish a sustainable Human Rights Defender School model and promote the realization of a human rights-friendly campus.

The program will feature several experts in human rights, such as Dr. Muktiono, MPhil (Chairman of SEPAHAM Indonesia), E. Josni A. K., MA., PhD. (Chairman of PUSHAM FH Unair), and Dr. Felviansyah R. SH., MH. (Lawyer and human rights expert). Other academic and human rights practitioners, including Cekil Prativu, LLM, PhD., and Dr. Shinto Ayu, SH., MH., will also be present to discuss various human rights topics, including minority rights, constitutional law, and child protection.

Through this program, UMM hopes to foster attitudes of mutual respect, tolerance, and anti-discrimination among the younger generation. The program also aims to strengthen inter-ethnic, inter-religious, and inter-racial relations and promote the creation of an inclusive and equitable campus environment.

With the theme “Realizing UMM as a Human Rights Friendly Campus,” the Human Rights Defender School is expected to be the first step in building awareness and a collective commitment to fighting for human rights in Indonesia.
